The Mayor's Christmas Tree Story

Planted this tree with my bare hands in Binder Park when I first ran for city council thirteen years ago. The sapling was a gift from Bill Clinton. Last week I used a saw from my grandfather's toolshed to cut it down. Elves from Bunceton helped me bring the tree to Rotary Centennial Park where it will be illuminated this Thursday at 6:00 thanks to other elves from Parks and Recreation. (Afterwards they were all kicked out of Paddy Malone's - - right up Bolivar Street from the park.) Thursday Rotary District Governor Steven Montgomery will help officiate. He will parachute from a C-130 passing overhead. Come by and join the fun. 

 

 

Could We Try This On People From Boone County?

Voters in Denver will consider a ballot initiative to create a UFO Commission. Promoter Jeff Peckman turned in more than the minimum 10,000 signatures to the City Clerk this week that would create a seven person commission to study extraterrestrials. Maybe Jefferson City and Cole County could do a cooperative project to study people from adjoining counties who come to the Capital City every day. It would be a great stimulus project. Lobbyists could pay a small fee to be exempt from scrutiny.

Sarah & Mildred Have Bonded

My Mom is 94. Lives at home. Bakes bread every Saturday and goes to the Healthplex for strength training. She's halfway through Sarah Palin's new book and she's buying copies for family members. She says "You wouldn't believe what that girl went through, and how she's managed to overcome obstacles."

Mildred and Frank were Cole County dairy farmers, raised five kids and overcame a few obstacles themselves. They were loyal Democrats. These days if you drop by the house Mildred will tell you what she thinks about where this country is heading. Then she'll give you a half loaf of bread and say some prayers for you after you leave - regardless of your party affiliation.

We're rightfully getting very particular about hygiene in our H1N1 World. An article from the New York Times might provide a little balance. Scientists think babies put stuff in their mouths not because they're dumb, but as an instinctive way to create a healthy immune system.

  

I Love My Can

My new can is cute.

The top looks like it's smiling.

It is a little smaller than my old can.

My new can is easy to move around even when it's full.

A modern truck grabs my can every week and turns it upside down to empty it.

I put stuff in my new can that will be recycled.

Some people don't like their new cans.

They should think about cans a little more, and what they mean for the future of our city.

I love my can.

Council "Vetoed" by Mayor's Bocce Team

The Mayor plays on the host Kiwanis Bocce Team, and they squared up against the heavily favored City Council Team tonight at Prison Brews. Council members Harvey, Klindt, Struemph and Medin (with Carroll in reserve) were supported loudly by Cole County officials Wrigley and Vincent. The cool fall temperatures seemed to chill the Council's efforts, and the Kiwanis team took two games out of three. There was talk of forming yet another standing committee to deal with this new problem.

East End Drug invited some celebrity soda jerks to their neat event last week, but Greg Gafke was one of the real deals. In this interview Greg talks about his lifelong love of donuts and other facets of his long past adolescence.

Coffee with the Mayor @ Memorial Park

The traditional inside experience of Coffee with the Mayor will move outdoors Saturday. Come to chat from 9:00 to 11:00 at Memorial Park and help kick off the 8th Annual Multicultural Forum Fall Festival -- it will last all day. In the spirit of ethnic sharing I may wear Lederhosen . . . Not.

Jerks and Others Welcome at East End Drug Reunion

Whaley's East End Drug, an East Side fixture re-gentrified by the Hubble family and much appreciated for its role in redevelopment efforts, will have some fun this Saturday at a "Soda Jerk Reunion and Customer Appreciation Party" from 1 to 5. Celebrity Jerks (no comment, please) will serve cherry cokes and root beer floats. Door prizes and good friends.
