A new restaurant on Missouri Boulevard is hardly front page news. But the Chipotle Grill opening this week at the former Back Yard Burger location might be worth pulling into the turning lane.
I received an invitation to the pre-opening from the Denver-based company. chipotle.com The event was mainly for "the farmers supplying the products for the restaurant." That was worth investigating on the way home Wednesday night.
What I discovered was not just a restaurant, but an entire culture. There were beef and pork producers from around central Missouri sampling the menu items. Russ Kremer is the CEO for Heritage Acres Foods, a farmer-owned consortium with offices in Mountain View, Missouri. heritageacresfoods.com
Chipotle purchases meat from quality producers like Heritage Acres Foods. The brochure says "We take pride in knowing where our food comes from." The animals are raised naturally, without hormones or antibiotics.
The menu is varied. Mexican dishes like "Barbacoa" look good for $6.10. Margaritas, domestic and imported beer available.
Chipotle has 750 stores nationwide. Mostly east and west coast. Ben Neis is a regional rep from Kansas City. His card lists his title as "Shepherd." He says it's "Food with Itegrity." He'd like the restaurant to be a part of the community.
All the farmers received t-shirts that have a little burrito with legs and a tail. They boast, "I raise the Carnitas." Since I grew up on a farm they gave me one.
Good food, convenient service, and thoughtfully healthy. A nice addition to Missouri Boulevard.
